Natural slate requires no chemical treatments, no artificial materials, and no furnaces to produce. Life cycle analysis confirms natural slate as the ecological option for facade cladding — with significantly lower water consumption, energy consumption, and atmospheric pollution than fiber cement, zinc, or clay alternatives.
CUPA PIZARRAS holds ISO 14001 environmental certification — pioneers in the natural slate sector in obtaining this standard — and carries a BRE Global Verified EPD, independently confirming the full life cycle environmental performance of their slate.
Natural slate is classified as noncombustible under ASTM E136, requiring no additional fire treatment and introducing no toxic byproducts. Once installed, CUPACLAD requires zero maintenance and zero replacement for the life of the building — eliminating the embodied carbon cost of material cycling that manufactured facade products inevitably carry.
Over 60% of CUPA PIZARRAS production uses marine transport — the lowest-emission freight mode available — and closed-loop water recycling systems at all quarries minimize water consumption throughout extraction and processing. Exhausted quarries are restored through hydroseeding of native plants, ensuring full ecological recovery of the site.
